Associate Professor Matthew Sharpe teaches philosophy at Deakin, and has published widely on modern receptions of classical philosophy. In his work on Albert Camus in particular, he has been interested in looking at how classical ethical philosophy, with its key concepts of moderation and limits, can provide sources of orientation for a secular age, facing environmental and social challenges created by a culture of excess and committed to limitless growth.

2:00: Dr Paul Barry (The University of Melbourne) On Singer and our Obligations to Others

Dr. Paul Barry completed a PhD at La Trobe University in 2015. His research interests lie mostly in moral philosophy, and he has lectured on the philosophy of Peter Singer and on applied ethics more generally. He will be discussing some of the alleged problems with Singer’s argument in Famine, Affluence and Morality, including the so-called ‘demandingness objection’, namely that the sacrifices Singer demands of us are too great.”
